Fusebox and Frameworks Conference

"Building your first FB application" interview with Jeff Peters *******************************************************

Michael Smith: Today I'm talking to Jeff Peters about his presentation, "Introduction to Fusebox". Jeff, what makes your session worth sitting in a meeting room for an hour?

Jeff Peters: Gee, Michael, no niceties at all, eh? Fair enough. The idea behind my session is to compare an application written in Fusebox with the same application written as it might have been without Fusebox (or any other framework, for that matter).

MS: So we'll get to see how visually appealing Fusebox apps are, right?

JP: Actually, no. Visually there will be absolutely no difference between the two applications.

MS: Well that's not very impressive. What are going to be showing, then?

JP: We're going to focus on the real differences that Fusebox brings to the table. We'll look code organization, flow control, maintenance issues, and so on. The point is that Fusebox isn't about eye candy; it's about real differences between working with a framework and working without one.

MS: Are you saying that Fusebox applications aren't visually appealing?

JP: Of course not. That's really a good point, though. Fusebox apps are no more or less visually appealing than any web app. The visual design has nothing to do with what's under the hood, in terms of a framework. That's why both applications will look and act just the same. To abscond with a phrase, beauty is only skin deep but Fusebox is to the bone.

MS: So this would be a good session for people who haven't used Fusebox, or who want to know what it's all about?

JP: That's probably the best audience, yes. But I also find that looking back on how we built applications without frameworks can be beneficial for those of us who use Fusebox regularly as well. I know when I do so I'm often amazed that stuff I wrote back then actually works (once I figure out what it was supposed to do, of course).

MS: Will you be signing copies of your latest Fusebox book?

JP: Yes if you bring a copy to my session I will be happy to sign it. More info at my website http://www.protonarts.com/

MS: OK, great. Well, thanks for the information about your session. I'm looking forward to hearing great things about it.

"Advanced Fusebox " Interview with Jeff Peter
**********************************************
Michael Smith: Today I'm talking to Jeff Peters about his preconference class, "Advanced Fusebox". Welcome back, Jeff.

Jeff Peters: Thanks, Michael. It's hard to believe we're on top of another Fusebox conference already!

MS: It sure is. And you're teaching another class the day before the conference. Tell me a little about what attendees can expect.

JP: Well, I'm really looking forward to it. I've been doing a lot of intro- level training lately, and it should be a lot of fun to do an advanced class. We're going to get into the grit of Fusebox 4 and really look at how to make it work for you in a professional setting.

MS: So students should have some experience with Fusebox already?

JP: I would highly recommend it, not only because we're going to be working with advanced-level material, but also because it's a one-day class and we're going to be moving fairly quickly.

MS: That's good to know. What sorts of topics will you be teaching?

JP: We'll be looking at the Fusebox process in detail, examining what Fusebox does when and how to leverage settings in the application configuration file. We'll also examine using CFCs with Fusebox, some advanced layout techniques, and how to integrate Fusebox with other applications.

MS: Sounds like a lot for a one-day session.

JP: It should be a full session, but hopefully interesting and fun enough to make the material useful and memorable.

MS: Great. I'm sure your students are in for a good day. What should they bring to class?

JP: A laptop with ColdFusion ready to go, and preferably the Fusebox 4 core files downloaded. I'll have them available as well, but it will save time if students already have them.

MS: I'll make sure we get the word out.

JP: Thanks. Good luck with the rest of the conference preparations.

MS: Thank you; it's looking like a great conference. See you there.
