Until the Fusebox conference ( September 18th - September 19th), we will be talking with featured speakers at the conference.
Interviews
6. Hal Helms - Bonus FLiP CD
In this Fusebox Conference interview Michael Smith talks with Hal Helms about a bonus
Fusebox Lifecycle Process (FLiP) CD that he and Jeff Peters are giving out
at the Fusebox conference.
Michael: I’m talking with Hal Helms about a rumor I’ve
heard. Hal, what’s this
that you and Jeff Peters did for the Fusebox conference?
Hal: Jeff and I got together for several hours and talked
about the FliP
process. Jeff, that master of all things technological, recorded
our talk and is
going to make it available to all Fusebox conference attendees.
Michael: What sort of things did you discuss?
Hal: I started off by relating a client of mine, a major
corporation, who
*thought* they were using the FliP process but who had actually
misunderstood
it.
Michael: How so?
Hal: Well, silly, you’ll have to wait for the conference
to find out!
Michael: Well, tell me something about your talk!
Hal: I thought it was very good. We went over the entire
FliP process,
explaining how it should and shouldn’t be done. Personally,
I find it very
helpful when I’m trying to learn something to get something
more than prose in a
book.
Michael: And how long did you and Jeff talk about this?
Hal: We have about three hours of recording. Jeff’s
going to edit it down a bit,
but it will probably be more than an hour and a half. Plus
I told my all time
best joke to Jeff.
Michael: Let me guess: I’ll have to wait…
Hal: …until the conference. Yes! Seriously, though,
we spoke about the initial
meeting with the client, wireframes, “front end first”,
DevNotes, mindmaps,
acceptance tests, Fusedocs, test harnesses—the whole
nine yards.
Michael: Do you think that most people “get” FliP?
Hal: Based on my experience, I would say no. They get parts
of it, but, like my
client, they tend to misinterpret parts and that can lead
to a greatly
diminished effectiveness for the management of the project.
Plus, I talked about
my recent week with two Java gurus who tried to sway me over
to Extreme
Programming.
Michael: I know you haven’t been a big fan of XP.
Hal: Parts of it I like very much, but it was very revealing
talking to these
guys. Let’s just say that I came away an even bigger
fan of FliP.
Michael: I’ve heard from some people who say they
won’t be able to come to the
conference this year. Any words of encouragement?
Hal: Well, certainly there are reasons that people just
can’t come, but for
people who are serious about their careers, I think Fusebox
and FliP can be very
helpful and the conference is a great way to learn in person
from the FBI.
Michael: The FBI?
Hal: You know, the Fusebox Illuminati.
Michael: Groan…
Hal: Funny, that’s just what Jeff said when I told
him my great joke.
Michael: Well, I am anxious to hear your talk. Are you guys
charging for this?
Hal: No, the audio will be free to all conference attendees.
Jeff and I may put
together some collateral stuff for sale, but we haven’t
determined that yet.
Michael: Great. Well, that’s another good reason to
come to the conference!
