Speaker Bios


 Charlie Arehart
Charlie Arehart, of SysteManage, is an Allaire certified instructor, who teaches both the Fast Track and Advanced ColdFusion courses. He's also a frequent contributor to the ColdFusion Journal and CF Advisor magazines, as well as a regular speaker at CF User Groups throughout the country.

Today, Charlie will be speaking on using the interactive debugger built into ColdFusion Studio. He promises that in the next 30 minutes, nearly everyone will learn something new about using the debugger, and if you have tried and failed, he will show you how you CAN indeed setup and use the debugger.

What many people don't know is that Charlie's also a past swing dance champion, has sung professionally with recording artists in Australia, and is currently loving life living on a golf course in suburban Maryland.

Michael Smith
Michael Smith is President of TeraTech, a 11-year old Rockville, Maryland consulting company that specializes in web and database development. TeraTech has developed sophisticated data-driven web sites for a wide range of organizations, from corporations to government agencies. In addition to ColdFusion, the TeraTech staff also have extensive experience in SQL databases, ASP, HTML, Access, Foxpro, Visual Basic and more. Michael has been programming for over 20 years and has been coding in ColdFusion since version 1.5 four years ago. He has an MA and BA from Cambridge University, England and graduated in the top 10 of his year.

Michael runs the Maryland ColdFusion User Group and organized three very successful CF events including CFUN-2k with 700 attendees. Michael volunteers at ByteBack, a non profit organization which provides computer training for unemployed and under-employed inner city residents. He also is a frequent contributor to Fusion Authority, the ColdFusion Developer Journal and the CPCUG monitor.

Steve Nelson
Steve Nelson is the CTO of Zero-G Commerce, Inc. He has been a member of Team Allaire since '97, and is also the Chairman of the Fusebox Organization which has attempted to create a standard "Open CF application architecture".

Steve has recently created an almost complete testing tool for finding bugs in your ColdFusion applications. Be sure to ask him to buy you a beer and he'll tell you about the tool. Or buy him a beer and he'll answer any CF question you have.

Steve Drucker
Steve Drucker is the CEO of Fig Leaf Software with offices in Washington DC and Atlanta GA. Fig Leaf is Allaire Premier Partner Company and Authorized Allaire Training Center.

Steve founded the very first Cold Fusion users group in May 1996, co-authored the book "The Cold Fusion Web Database Construction Kit" 1st & 2nd Edition w/Ben Forta, frequently contributes to the "Cold Fusion Developers Journal Magazine", and is a certified Allaire instructor.

Shlomy Gantz
Shlomy Gantz is a vice president of CoreActive

He has more than 3 years of experience in Cold Fusion application development and has worked with the Israeli Ministry of Education and leading Web Technology companies in Israel . Since 1996 he has developed various UI custom tags, published articles in CF_Advisor and given presentations in CGSIG and NYCFUG.

Despite all that Shlomy is a Certified Shiatsu Therapist and Instructor, having worked in research in hospitals and private clinics in Israel.

Howie Hamlin
Howie Hamlin is inFusion lead developer and Project Manager. He worked in telecommunications for 10 years as a systems engineer (large PBX systems) for NEC America. Developed custom telecom-related software solutions including a complete database driven telemanagement system for the NEC NEAX 2400 PBX. Took over lead development of internet-based software for On-Line Data Solutions.

Developed the initial idea behind the "inFusion" concept which mates ColdFusion to other existing technologies. Personally coded most of the original "CFEngine" and its' current replacement; the "inFusion Engine".

Howie will be talking about inFusion new email server.

Robi Sen
Robi Sen is the Chief Information Officer and Vice President of Software Development at Granularity, Inc. Mr. Sen has been working professionally in the software development world for the last 13 years since he was recruited at the age of 16 to develop software systems for Westinghouse Hanford Co and the Defense Department. He worked for Westinghouse and various government programs on and off for 5 years.

Mr. Sen's chief areas of interest are in the creation of a new breed of network-based applicationsand the development of "Intelligent Agents" or software systems which can interact with humans and other machines in a "thoughtful manner" making context appropriate decisions for their user without having to receive instructions from their user. He has spoken widely on these topics and has most recently presented a series of classes to the American Management Association entitled Electronic Commerce. He is also currently working on a book with G. Hussain Chinoy for Morgan Kaufmann Publishers entitled "XML/EDI: The Future of Electronic Commerce" as well as finishing a book on Allaire's ColdFusion called Developing ColdFusion Applications.

Bill Rogers
Bill Rogers is the founder and CEO of Ektron where he has assembled a stellar technical and Senior Executive team to offer leading edge e-commerce solutions, including first-of-a-kind applications that enable organization-wide dynamic Web content management by non-technical professionals.

He has a solid foundation of technical and product development expertise, and astute business sense to create new technologies and business endeavors.

He has co-founded three successful businesses in less than a decade. At Zydacron, Inc., co-developer with AT&T, of the first video conferencing chip set, Bill led product development and strategic partnering efforts with major technology firms.

Leon Chalnick
Leon Chalnick is the president of Adnavta Solutions. He has been using ColdFusion since version 1.0. He developed his first ColdFusion web site for another user group (the now defunct Southern California Paradox Users Group) in 1995 and his company has been focused on developing ColdFusion applications ever since then.

He is an author of many books and articles. He is also the president of the SCCFUG. He and his company re-wrote the SCCFUG web site using Spectra in late 1999.

Cameron Siguenza
Cameron Siquenza co-founded www.evolutionB.com (formerly www.catouzer.com) in 1995 in Vancouver, BC, Canada almost immediately after graduating from University.

EvolutionB is the provider of SynergyNow and the developer of Synergy 2.0, a collaborative work environment for Intranets and Extranets built with ColdFusion. They are now creating "M39" an Internet Customer Relationship Management system based on Allaire Spectra.

Adam Churvis
Adam Phillip Churvis, president of Productivity Enhancement, Inc., is an ecommerce specialist with twenty years of software industry experience.

Productivity Enhancement, Inc. made a complete switch from LAN-based Client/Server development to ColdFusion back in 1997, and since that time has devoted his business to creating useful tools for ColdFusion developers and better ways to do business on the Internet.

He is actively involved in both the Atlanta and Birmingham ColdFusion Users Groups, and is available to speak at other CFUGs upon request. He also presents the popular "Ecommerce Development with ColdFusion" seminar, which now sports a three-day format. Adam's company is currently working on the next generation of their CommerceBlocks line of modular ColdFusion development tools.

Christine Pascarella
Christine Pascarella is the Vice President of Sales of Virtualscape, a Hostcentric Company. Christine is one of the co-founders of Virtualscape, and has served as both the head of sales and as the Manager of Technical Support from 1997 to 1999.

Previously, Christine worked as a webmaster for the International Research and Exchange Board. Christine holds a Masters of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh and a BA in International Studies and German from Dickinson College.

Michael Imhoff
Michael Imhoff is the CTO for Omnicypher; an Allaire Alliance Consulting Partner specializing in custom web application solutions. Michael has consulted for numerous companies such as Granularity Information Architecture, Inc. and onProject.com Inc. Some of his work can be viewed at LitigationOnline.com, onProject.com, AbraAuto.com, Miracle-Ear.com, and MediJect.com. Michael's core skills revolve around creating manageable, calable, web applications for business.

Michael is the president of an E-Commerce club at St. Cloud State University in which he is also a student, a regular attendee of the Twin Cities CFUG and currently coordinating with Allaire to start a CFUG in St. Cloud, MN.

John Paul
Ashenfelter

  John Paul Ashenfelter is the President of TransitionPoint, a venture-funded technology consulting and capiltal firm specializing in strategic technology analysis, R&D, technology efficiency, and building startup technology companies. He personally focuses on web database development with ColdFusion and Java, data modeling, emerging technology, and strategic use of technology. He is also a frequent writer and ocassional technology speaker.

John Paul got bitten by the ColdFusion bug while working as a faculty technology advisor at the University of Virginia -- once he saw the power of ColdFusion 2.0, he happily quit working in Perl! Since then, he has worked on dozens of educationally-focused ColdFusion applications at the University of Virginia and elsewhere. During the past two years, he has spent more time developing web applications with ColdFusion in the commercial world. He served as CTO for ExploreMath.com, building their entire web and application infrastructure in ColdFusion. After successfully closing the first round of financing with that company, he went on changed gears by becoming a senior web developer for the online game show giant Boxerjam. Offered the opportunity to create a small venture consulting firm early in 2000, he jumped at the opportunity and founded TransitionPoint, which begins official operations in August of 2000.

In the past several years, John Paul has spent a great deal of time consulting , speaking, and writing for and about the web. Along with writing feature articles for WebReview.com and the OReilly Network, he is the Database Developer columnist for WebReview.com and is now the aboutSQL columnist for the OReilly network. He has also found time to write two books: Choosing a Database for your Web Site (Wiley, 1998) and ColdFusion 4 for Dummies (IDG, 2000). Conference speaking has taken him from Germany to Vancouver with a number of stops in between. He also is editor of www.webdatabase.org, where he is actively looking for contributors and editors.

In a previous life, John Paul earned a BS and MS in chemistry. While working on his PhD, he was lured to switch gears to web development after spending two years working with lasers literally downstairs from the NCSA where Marc Andressen was developing Mosaic. He is currently (still) finishing a PhD in chemical education at the University of Virginia in his spare time. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia, with his wife Ann, two cats, and a dog.

Michael Dinowitz

Michael Dinowitz has dedicated the last five years of his life to the ColdFusion community and it doesn't look like he's stopping any time soon. His accomplishments include: Head of RT&T (Research, Training & TroubleShooting) for House of Fusion / CoreActive Hosting the high volume CF-Talk list (as well as others) out of House of Fusion (www.houseoffusion.com) Publishing the Fusion Authority weekly news alert (www.fusionauthority.com/alert) Writing many articles for the above magazine as well as many others Co-Author of the best selling CF web application construction kits Videos, teaching, presentations and more Whether its researching the lowest levels of ColdFusion functionality or presenting to an audience, Michael's passion for the language is clear to see. Outside of Allaire, there are few evangelists as dedicated to the spread of the language and the strengthening of the community.
Hal Helms
Hal ([email protected]) is a developer/strategist who writes on development issues within the ColdFusion community. He is a TeamAllaire member and speaks frequently on successful development with Fusebox. He is a monthly columnist with "ColdFusion Developer's Journal" and is writing a book on ColdFusion for Prentice Hall to be published in February, 2001. He holds training/mentoring classes for companies who want a proven method for developing Web applications. 
Dave Watts

Dave is Vice President, Technology Services of webworld studios, inc. Dave is co-author of the Forta Spectra book. 
April Fleming
April Fleming has been developing ColdFusion Applications since 1997. She spent 2 and a half years at the Institute for Simulation and Training, a research division of the University of Central Florida. Most of her time there was devoted to developing and maintaining the Modeling and Simulation Resource Repository, a ColdFusion Application developed for the Air Force, Navy, Army, and Office of Training Technology. April is now a Web Software Developer for Federal Data Corp., a subcontractor to Space Gateway Systems at Kennedy Space Center, developing web applications for NASA.

April founded the Orlando ColdFusion User Group in August of 1999.

Judith Dinowitz
Judith Dinowitz has been editing and commenting on ColdFusion and the ColdFusion community since November 1998, and loves it. Her credits include a stint as Editor-in-Chief of CF Advisor, and marriage to Michael Dinowitz (which has taught her much about CF by osmosis.) She edits Fusion Authority (http://www.fusionauthority.com) and, with Michael, puts out the Fusion Authority Weekly News Alert, an online email newsletter dedicated to ColdFusion.

Judith will be speaking on Fusion Authority and other online resources for ColdFusion.

Chris Mosier
Chris Mosier serves as the Chief Information Officer for Weberize, an interactive agency based in Nashville, TN. Introduced to Cold Fusion in 1998, it serves as his primary development tool. Chris is responsible for overseeing development of custom applications for Weberize, in addition to managing both the product development process and managing Weberize's internal information networks. He graduated with a B.S. from Vanderbilt University and joined two others to found Weberize in their kitchen in 1998. They now have offices in Nashville, New York and Cairo. Chris organized and is running the CF Family Feud at CFUN-2k.

Amy Brooks
Amy Brooks is the User Group Marketing Manager for Allaire Corp. Overseeing 150 worldwide ColdFusion and Spectra User Groups, Amy's goal is to have all 500,000 developers using Allaire products to be involved with their local CFUG or SPUG! User Groups are an excellent way to exchange knowledge with fellow developers and to stay on the cutting edge of new Allaire Technology. An excellent example of an exciting CFUG is the Maryland CFUG who is a sponsor of this very exciting CFUN-2K event!
