FYI, I was in New Orleans for a conference a few years ago and had a great time. The convention center is a brief walk from a few large downtown, expensive hotels, 5-10 minutes max from Bourbon Street, and near the water and a mall.
There is a limosine service from the airport during weekdays that is pretty cheap ($10-15?) that is actually in a Limo. I guess they use them for airport shuttles when they aren't partying on weekends. There are plenty of tours down there to historic places, cemetaries, and even air boat rides (VERY FUN).
Also, when I was there I stayed at a youth hostel a few days. They had dormitory quarters for <$20 per night and private rooms with a private bathroom for $50 or so a night. I'm sure there are others in town, but this is the one I stayed at. Its about a 10-20 minute nice walk or $1.50 tram ride from bourbon street and the conference location.
